What to bring :
- Remember the key phrases : "cotton is rotton" or "cotton kills"
- Warm Sleeping Bag
- A thick pad. This is crucial, even with a warm bag if your lying on the snow you'll be ice cold
- tarp, on which to put pad and sleeping bag
- warm, water resistant boots (not too tight, need room for socks)
- warm socks (multiple pair, 3X)
- water resistant pants of some sort, if you don't have these you can wear wool pants, try to avoid cotton such as jeans. The less waterproof the more likely you'll need multiple pairs, as one will get wet on Friday.
- water resistant shell (this can be something quite thin, as long as its water resistant) it can be worn over warm layers
- warm layers, coat/fleece, sweater
- long underwear, uppers and bottoms (its especially nice to have two pair, so that one dry pair can be slept in at night)
- gloves (multiple pairs, at least two, as one pair will get wet. Mittens are better than gloves)
- warm hat
- tent, in the event that we don't get the snow caves built
- snacks
- utensils, cup, fork, spoon (we'll provide food)
- if he has snow saw from prior years or snow shovel. A flat mouthed shovel also works. These are not required as we'll have some to spare.
- pocket warmers (just a couple, they are pretty inespensive)
- plastic bag for wet gear
- flash light
- bakcpack, as we'll be hiking in about 1/4 to 1/2 mile
- sled if he has one to drag gear in
