Ross Lake
Campsites
Campsites are reserved on a first come first served so we try to find the Ranger
as soon as we get to the lake to book our itineraries. We arrive at the lake
with our proposed schedule and most times have to make a change or two because
a campsite is full the night we want to use it. There has been twice when the
Rangers have allowed both groups to be in the same campsite together. Both times
at Big Beaver. Actual tent sites in each campsite are first-come-first-grab,
but if your group of 10 is scheduled
to be at Lightning Creek on the Monday, then there will be spots available for
your 10 folks that night - and no one else can take that space. The rangers
go to the campsites every single day! You have to get a (free) permit for each
night that you stay near the lake, and the rangers enforce the reservations.
West side is less crowded than east, as west is only accessible via canoe and
east side has a trail.
Rod Nye Campground reccomendations
- Islands are nice less bugs
- Cat Island (very popular)
- Boundary Bay : very secluded
- Lightening Creek : good because a lot to do
- paddle up the creek as far as you can
- Little Beaver : buggy try to avoid
- Big Beaver or Spencer on south end for 2 nights
- Roland Point : secluded, water seems colder
Activities
- Ponderosa : cliff jumping near by 18-20 foot cliffs with deep water
- Fishing : single barbless hooks, no bait, minimum size 13"
- Wind : Kicks up around 2pm. Going south paddle in morning. Going north take
chance wait for wind so can sail. West side of lake less cluttered than east.
Areas near shore have submerged stumps.
- Devils Creek : amazing creek to paddle up (Lightening Creek is also good)
- Artic Creek is a cool water fall that most people never see because it's
tucked back in a little cove and on the opposite side of the lake from where
most people paddle.
